Making a WiFi Catcher
Written by Max Baun

So you are sitting out back by your pool trying to work at home for the day. Unfortunately, your wireless card in your computer is not strong enough to detect the router inside of your house. I’ve got a home made device that will help you pick up WiFi signals from locations your wireless card couldn’t pick up alone. You will need the following items:

  • 6-10 ft USB Extension Cable
  • USB WiFi adapter
  • Metal Strainer/Bowl
  • Camera TriPod
  • Strong glue or epoxy

  1. The first step is to cut a hole in the strainer. Make sure it is large enough for the WiFi adapter to fit through. However, don’t cut it too big where the USB device will just slip through.
  2. With the hole, put the WiFi catcher on the inside part of the strainer, and join it with the female end of the USB extension cable coming from the outside of the strainer. Once you connect these two, it will sort of look like a satellite.
  3. Now take some strong glue or epoxy and fill in the hole where the extension cable and adapter are connected. Let this sit for a while until it dries.
  4. Once dry you put your satellite looking device on the tripod, using the tripod’s screw and a hole towards the bottom of the strainer.
  5. Raise it up a good height, plug the other end of the USB extension cable into your computer, and point it towards the WiFi spot.

You will notice a huge jump in signal due to the strainer catching the signal and concentrating it onto the USB WiFi adapter. Think of WiFi connections as wind when sailing. The bigger the sail, the more force the sail will experience and the faster the boat will move.

Can I Help You?
I worked in some form of retail for roughly 7 years while I was in high school and college. I considered myself to be good at my respective jobs and always focused on putting in my best effort (OK, fine.....maybe not ALWAYS). I held my last retail position for 5 years before and while I was in college at Staples. Yeah, I did that....(<---that's a play on the "Yeah, we got that slogan there, get it? OK bad joke). ANYWAY, back to my original point. While at Staples I worked in a variety of roles from Office Supplies to Receiving to Office Equipment Sales, to PC Technician. The last two were pretty much the same thing; I spent most of the time selling computer related hardware, software, and whatnot to people.

Here lie the Yankees: Old and beat up, to be resurrected this summer
Written by Larry Dobrow

In recent years, the premature Yankee obituary has become as much a rite of mid-May as the Preakness Stakes.

It works something like this: the Yankees stumble out of the gate. The lesser-informed contingent of the New York media notices and starts to qualify its every mention of the word "Yankees" with either "last-place" or "struggling." Talk radio hums with the monosyllabic lilt of incensed Staten Islanders, while the tabloids land many a bruising jab -- like the one in Monday's New York Daily News, in the form of a photo caption that reads "Ryan Church avoids tag for run that helps turn hallowed Stadium into Met turf." Zing!

Off-Season '08

I've been enjoying the onslaught of comments made to me by Sox fans and general Yankee haters alike regarding the Yankees not making the playoffs this year. It's been a blast! It was a rough season filled with injuries and under performance, there is no other way to spin it. Unlike many Yankee fans, I am not all that upset about it to be honest. The reason being this is the first time in a long time there is substantial promise for the near future. Sure, our friendly columnists in the NY Daily News, Post, Boston Globe, and Boston Herald will point to Hughes and Kennedy's roguh first campaigns. That's fine and totally within their right, but I must point out that Hughes and Kennedy are still barely VERY young, which gives them plenty of time to continue development. But back to my point for this article, what should the Yankees do in the off season of 2008?? You may think at first some of these moves are a bit unrealistic, but I challenge you to research them a bit more before coming to a quick conclusion. Here goes nothing...

Social Marker

So you've created this great website, put in all sorts of great graphics to better explain your product and/or service, and optimized it for your target audience. Now it's time to just sit back and watch the traffic flow in, right? WRONG! One of the most common misconceptions about search engine optimization (SEO) and link building is that it will just happen on its own. SEO and link building takes time and effort. Simply creating a website isn't enough anymore unless you have specific campaigns designed to drive traffic to your website.

Effective Networking

I had a good conversation with a guy I met at a networking event about a week ago where he asked me what my feelings were on the best strategy for networking. He had been working on his PhD and had been in Academia for so long that he was interested in what my opinion was in regards to the most effective networking.
